P.F. Gives Back: Girls Build LA

As a female-founded and co-owned company, we understand the impact women make in small businesses. That’s why we're giving back this Women's History Month. Throughout March, we're donating 10% of all No. 25: Nightshade profits to the organization Girls Build LA.
As part of the LA Promise Fund, an educational nonprofit preparing young students for successful careers, Girls Build LA is a transformative program for middle and high school students to tackle and solve community issues. Young women in Los Angeles face community challenges from poverty levels to lack of access to materials needed in successful education. High poverty percentages lead to high rates of school dropouts, and Girls Build LA aims to empower improvement. Women are powerful, no matter their household income or street address. GBLA is one of many outreach programs to encourage higher education and make success attainable. Teams from schools across LAUSD are challenged to create solutions to issues using STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) principles. Each year, the Girls Build LA teams attend an expo to show their projects and what they put in to creating positive answers to these problems. Six winning teams receive up to $50,000 in scholarships to kickstart future success, both inside the classroom and out. Besides the offered scholarship, girls take the lessons they gain from the challenge into each future endeavor. In the end, every girl is a winner, creating a stronger tomorrow.

We chose to celebrate Women’s History Month with a donation to Girls Build LA for a couple reasons. Los Angeles plays a huge role in our company's history as P.F. Candle Co.’s homebase (we pour, pack and ship everything in Boyle Heights). Programs like the LA Promise Fund and GBLA are doing their part to beautify the city we live in and its amazing residents. This March, we’re joining the movement.

P.F. Candle Co. was started by our founder, Kristen, in 2008. She lived in New York, lost her job at a craft magazine, and decided to pursue her real business dream: candlemaking. Without some failure, there'd be no success. And no P.F.! Knowing that a once difficult situation got the company where it is now inspires us to help others along the way. Girls Build LA is challenging and empowering thousands to reach their full potential, and that’s what we strive to do each day.

Donating to GBLA just made sense.
